I saw my Mom today and she was telling the ladies at our knitting group how busy I am. Like crazy busy. I guess she’s right, and I probably do tell people I am busy a lot, but it still surprised me to hear her say it.
When I was in high school I was close friends with my cousin in the same grade. She was in every sport there was, went to church, etc., etc. It seemed like every time I asked her to do anything she said, “I’m really sorry but I’m just so busy… I have practice… I have a game… I have ____”. It sort of drove me crazy. I never understood why she would let herself be so busy. What about enjoying life and having fun!?
Now I get it. 100%. Sure, people might think I’m busy and I agree. However, I am really enjoying the things I’m doing. Even when I get tired and burnt out I still feel like this is all worth it. For example, here’s what I did today: made 6 loaves of bread, knitted for several hours including 1 hour at class, posted twice on here, completely emptied out our spare bedroom and cleaned it, went grocery shopping, made chili (with a mix), talked with my husband, made homemade chocolate pudding, and listened and learned from the Dave Ramsey show almost the entire time. I am gaining so many life skills that will stick with me forever, I’m loving it!
I don’t post about the stuff I do all the time to make anyone feel lazy (Abbie! 🙂 ). I hope it is mostly encouraging! This time, too, I hope anyone reading and wondering why some people are so busy may have gained a better understanding. Kudos to those of you who make me feel lazy (like pretty much anyone with children). And remember to take a breath and make sure you’re doing it all for the right reasons. Life’s too short to work hard for the wrong reasons!
I know how you feel! A few years ago when I was finishing up my first MS degree, working full time and we were building our house on nights and weekends, I was so busy, but it was all worth it! When I finished the degree and we moved in here, I was so bored. That’s actually when I started the blog, after a winter of having all this found time.
Now I’m taking chances to rest and enjoy not being busy until the baby comes! Even though I’ll be home for the first 5 months or so, I’m sure that I’ll be busier than when I’m working!
You are going to be so busy, but it will be wonderful I’m sure. 🙂
Your busy time sounds like a few years ago for us. I was in school and working, Brian was working and farming for a bunch of other people, and we usually got about 4-5 hours of sleep each night. Literally if we were home we were sleeping. It is so much better now that we’re busy but enjoying the things we’re doing. I’m sure you feel the same.

Wow someone was as busy as me today. I made buns, 2 types of cookies, homemade baby food, did the laundry, bathed 2/3 kids and tidied up. Now I’m watching hockey with the hubby and checking up on my bloggy friends. I’m starting to feel like a P31 wife. Now that’s funny!! 🙂
Way to go! I hope I can do as much as you when I have little ones to juggle too. I can’t imagine!
OMG, my life exactly! My husband keeps asking me why I want to work so hard and if working is really how I want to spend my time. What he really means is the work I do OUTSIDE of real work, if that makes any sense! I’m earning my Doctorate in Educational Leadership (which is a ton of work) in addition to my full-time job as a Math Specialist in elementary schools–and I help out with our family farm and all kinds of volunteer activities–and I love it all. I can’t imagine saying NO to any of it! To be truthful, the stuff I could really live without is the laundry, dishes, cooking, etc., etc., but there isn’t anyone else to do that because they’re all too busy, too! (Did you notice that I didn’t even mention cleaning? Pretty much gave that up a while ago!)
If Abbie thinks she’s busy now, wait until March!!!!!! (I hope to be busier then, too!)
Sounds like you are very busy! You remind me of my cousin, she teaches HS math, is the math dept. head, coaches track and forensics, etc., etc. Glad to hear cleaning is at the bottom of your list too, I bet your house doesn’t look as bad as mine right now though! We’re just not accepting visitors this week. 😉
Umm, you might just actually lose that bet! Ha ha!
I think busy is a GOOD thing! 🙂
=)
Hey-just found your site ! Love it! Thanks for all the open honest info. I also really like your git er done tab. I’ve been thinking about moving my blog to wordpress. And I think you may have me convinced!
Kris
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the blog. Check back in awhile, I hope to get the git er done page organized with links to certain projects and more details and how tos. I do like wordpress a lot better. The only downside is that I haven’t found a way to make a blog list like the one on blogger that shows what is updated so I have to go to each page and check for new posts. I suppose you could use Google reader or something but I haven’t figured that out yet. Overall though it is very nice here.
i’m glad you know where i was coming from now 🙂
LoL! Who knew you were reading! Glad I didn’t talk trash about ya. Yes, I understand completely now. 🙂
Great post. My husband doesn’t understand how I’m always so busy since I stay at home but I like being busy. If I wasn’t busy being at home all day would suck. Not many women seem to cook/bake from scratch, have a garden, clean as much as I do (I have turned in to my mom. 🙂 , crochet/knit, etc… Then there is my blog, freelance writing, freelance photography and some web design. And recycling coalition, green team at church, and all that stuff I get roped in to. But I love it!
Wow, you make my life sound boring!! I was with you on the cooking, knitting, cleaning (sort of), etc. but you lost me on the rest of it. I’ve been giving some serious thought to getting more involved in our church. Glad to hear you can fit it all in!
